MicroPro®

Environmental Certifications

Environmentally Preferable Product

MicroPro® was the first, and is the only, wood treatment process to be certified as an Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP), by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), based on Life-Cycle Assessment.

The MicroPro® wood treatment process systems were analyzed by SCS (Scientific Certification Systems) under an exhaustive environmental review process called Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA), in accordance with rigorous international standards set by ISO, the leading international standards setting organization. The MicroPro LCA studies are in compliance with ISO standards 14044 and 14025.

Reduced Energy Use

The MicroPro treated wood process reduces total energy use by approximately 80% and greatly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, when compared to wood treated with amine copper preservatives.

Largely Eliminates Copper Releases

Wood products treated with the MicroPro process result in the release of 90% to 99% less copper into aquatic and terrestrial environments when compared to amine copper preservative systems. The very small amount released bonds readily to organic matter in the soil and becomes biologically inactive, thus effectively eliminating eco-toxic impacts.

Reduced Air Emissions

The solution containing the MicroPro copper preservative formula is four times more concentrated than amine copper preservative systems.

As a result, fewer trucks are required for transport. Fewer trucks, combined with the absence of monoethanolamine (MEA) in the production process, results in a reduction of air pollutants from exhaust emissions and associated impacts, including: soot, nitrous oxide, volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), particulate matter, and reduced impacts of acid rain, smog, and oceanic acidification.

Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The absence of MEA in the production process, combined with the reduced use of fuel and fewer trucks, means that using MicroPro technology, in the USA alone, in lieu of wood treatment formulations that contain MEA reduces greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 20,000 tons or more each year. (This is the equivalent to the annual emissions of approximately 2,200 SUV’s.)

GREENGUARD Children and Schools Certification

GREENGUARD GOLD Certification indicates that a product has undergone rigorous testing and has met stringent standards for low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. Products certified to this criteria are suitable for use in schools, offices, and other sensitive environments.

Products bearing the UL GREENGUARD GOLD Certification mark meet strict testing criteria for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), helping to reduce indoor air pollution, minimize chemical exposure and create healthier indoor environments.

Global GreenTag GreenRate™ Level A Award

MicroPro® Wood Treatment Technology has received a Global GreenTag GreenRate™ Level A award under Version 4.0 of the Global GreenTag International Product Certification Standard. It is the highest level achievement for a product under Global GreenTag’s GreenRate™ product rating system – declared by the certification body as ‘Fit-for-Purpose’ and confirmed for Green Building compliance.

GreenRate™ Level A equals to a Sustainability Factor of 100 percent under the Australian and New Zealand Green Building Councils’ Green Star™ 'Design and As Built v1.2' and 'Interiors v1.2' Rating Tools Credits.

To compare the differences between the three levels of GreenRate (A, B and C) the Global GreenTag certification systems ranks a Level B product to have a Sustainability Factor of 75 percent and a Level C product, a Sustainability Factor of 50 percent.

The Global GreenTag GreenRate™ Level A rating given to MicroPro® Wood Treatment Technology also gives the product relevancies and compliance with Features under the WELL™ Building Standard Equivalencies, including Feature 26: Enhanced Material Safety and Feature 97: Material Transparency.

The program is recognised by the Green Building Councils of New Zealand and South Africa. In Australia, the GreenRate™ program is also relevant to Infrastructure professionals working with the ‘IS’ rating tool from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia.
